“The New Yorkers” by Cathleen Schine

I would call this book pleasantly soothing.

The characters all seem flawed, uncertain in their wishes and directions*, yet somehow the writing evokes a mellow goodwill, benevolent pleasure in reading about the events as they unroll.

As my own everyday life is at this time full of anxiety and chronic stress, so I did find the book a perfect escapism and will be seeking out more works of Cathleen Schine.

* save one, Doris, who is the only wholly unpleasant character, yet reading about her is, thanks to the general goodwill-inducing way of the book, less irritating than one might assume.
